Winter Activities for Seniors

Winter marks the coming of the holiday season—a time of merriment, joy, and reflection—and the coming of the cold.

As a senior citizen, going skiing or snowmobiling might be more of a health risk than it is worth. And despite the comfort and ease of watching television, hours of inactivity can leave you feeling bored and unproductive. It is important to stay sharp, active, and content in your daily life.

While the sidewalks are icy and the snow is deep, there are many activities that you can do to socialize and keep your mind and body active.

Swimming

Swimming is a great way to stay active. It is physically and emotionally beneficial, working out your body and refreshing your mind. Take a few laps, complete a low-impact pool workout, or enjoy a casual swim with your family and friends. Swimming is a very low-impact physical activity, yet it is demanding enough to give you a great workout that you can really feel. This is why New Horizons at Marlborough has a state-of-art pool facility on the premises for our residents. Learn more about our fitness center and pool.

Gardening

Gardening? In the winter? Thankfully, our facility has a greenhouse so you can wake up and smell the flowers all year long. Gardening is a popular hobby for good reason: It is a stress-reducing activity that includes a decent amount of exercise. Gardening is a great way to stay active and connected to nature.

Book Club

Organize or join a book club. Books open worlds, memories, and emotions that we do not feel every day. A book club is a social activity that is intellectually stimulating. Read the same books as your peers as you talk about the themes, plot, and how each book relates to life.

Sports Club

Organize or join a club to play sports that are fairly easy on your body, like cross-country skiing or billiards. These sports are relatively low impact, but require concentration and may help you break a sweat. If you feel like participating is beyond your reach, organize a club to watch your favorite sports, either on television or in person.

Poker Club

Poker is a timeless card game that can be played by anyone, no matter your age, even if you don’t have a good poker face. This fun stimulating game requires you to use both hemispheres of your brain.
