Golden Hour Sunset Activities

Photographers and filmmakers often seek out what’s known as the “golden hour,” when the sun is closest to the horizon at the start and end of each day. It is a special time because the sun’s rays produce a golden hue across everything in their path. Sunsets during the summer months can be especially pleasant, as the temperature is nice enough to fully enjoy the sunset and all its beauty. We wanted to write a blog on some of the favorite gold hour activities for seniors at New Horizons at Marlborough.

Photography

Photographers seek out the golden hour because its characteristic soft lighting makes for great pictures of landscapes, objects, and human subjects. Regardless of whether you are an expert photographer or are using the camera on your cell phone, photos taken during this hour benefit from the exceptional lighting. Amateur photographers often find the golden hour to be an ideal time because the light is so forgiving. With some additional camera filters, and by implementing photography best practices, you can create photos worth showing off to friends and family.

Sunset Walks

Taking a walk during the golden hour is a great way to stay active and enjoy the weather. On hot days, golden hour temperatures begin to drop, and winds can increase. If it was a comfortable day already, wearing an additional layer may be the best option when going on a sunset walk. The golden hour during the summer months falls around 7:00 PM, which is after dinnertime for many individuals. Getting out for a short walk after eating can help speed up metabolism.

Meditation or Yoga

Yoga and meditation are great ways to relax and reflect at the end of the day. Engaging in these activities during the golden hour, as the day turns to night, provides an additional element of relaxation. Warm summer nights provide a visually appealing backdrop and comfortable weather for those who are meditating or doing yoga. Be sure to bring a yoga mat or blanket and find a grassy spot with no rocks. If meditating, it may be best to perform this activity alone. If you choose to do yoga, bring along a friend, and be sure to consult your physician if your mobility is limited.
