It would be a shame to waste a perfectly beautiful summer day. We encourage our seniors to get out, get active, and enjoy the many splendors of the summer season. A dose of nature is great for the body, mind, and spirit. We provide a wealth of wholesome outdoor activities our seniors can enjoy at their leisure. There’s always something fun to do in the sun.

Gardening is a rewarding activity. Starting from seed takes patience and a lot of care, but watching that seed become something beautiful proves what a worthwhile venture it is. Gardening is a highly beneficial activity for seniors, which is why we have our very own greenhouse on our campus. Not only is it a good source of exercise and a great way to soak up some natural Vitamin D, but it also boasts some excellent benefits to overall physical and mental health. The good bacteria found in garden soil, Mycobacterium vaccae, is known to improve the immune system and reduce reactions to allergens. A study of 2,805 men and women taking place over a 16-year period showed that regular gardening reduced the risk of dementia by 36 percent, proving that gardening is just as good for the brain as it is for the body.

Nature Walks

Nature walks are an excellent low-impact form of exercise. A leisurely stroll through nature can lift the spirits. It’s great for cardiovascular health, circulation, blood pressure management, and muscular health. Nature also has an inherently soothing effect on the mind. Watching the seasons change and enjoying the flora and fauna is an uplifting experience.

Birdwatching is a gentle activity that many seniors enjoy. Birdwatchers appreciate the experience of watching the circle of life. Tracking families of birds tells a whole story, and daily birdwatching shows the entire life cycle. Eggs hatch, fledglings leave the nest, and they eventually go on to lay their own eggs. Watching birds and listening to their songs is inherently relaxing. The flutter of wings and the cheerful chirps make casual birdwatching just as enjoyable as hobby birdwatching. Seniors who enjoy sketching might find that birdwatching offers them some excellent artistic inspiration.

Enjoying the Summer

There is no shortage of ways that seniors can have a wonderful time outdoors during the summer. What’s the sense in sitting around inside all day when the whole world is waiting? Our outdoor activities are healthy, fun, and stimulating. Gardening, nature walks, and birdwatching are just the beginning.
