Summer is upon us, which means it’s time to take advantage of the warm weather. There are plenty of activities for senior citizens, particularly in the Marlborough area. If you’re visiting a loved one at New Horizons at Marlborough, try out one of the activities listed below.

Fishing: There are many fishing areas in and around Marlborough, and this activity is perfectly suited for both seniors and children. During fishing, you can talk and unwind, enjoy a snack, and take in beautiful views.

Have a Picnic: Picnics can take place almost anywhere such as the backyard, near a public garden, or at the beach. Find a location with some shade in case it gets too warm, and make sure there is plenty of seating.

Water Aerobics: This is one of the best ways to cool off and get in some exercise. Working out in the pool is an excellent way to lose weight, and it’s great for the joints as well as strengthening the muscles.

Visit a Museum: Ideal for a rainy day, there are plenty of museums in and around Boston. Seniors can move at their own pace through the museum while taking in the artwork or exhibits. There are also typically plenty of benches to take a rest.

Scrapbooking: While scrapbooking can be done during any season, seniors can go outside, lay out a blanket, and start crafting their book of memories. This activity also helps seniors celebrate their family, cope with losses, and reflect on holidays.

Join a Book Club:  Reading isn’t just for the rainy days, in fact, it’s the perfect way to spend your time while soaking up the sun. If there isn’t a book club in the area, now is the time to start one.

Tend to a Garden: Gardening is an excellent way to get in some exercise and spend time outdoors. This activity is also ideal for seniors seeking some alone time or those who want to work with others. Get creative and plant some veggies you don’t normally eat, or create rows of luscious flowers.

If your loved on is living at an assisted living home, see what activities are offered. At New Horizons at Marlborough, we offer daily activities for residents, including watercise classes, morning walks, and garden clubs.
