When loved ones first visit a resident of an assisted living or retirement community, they may not know what to expect. Here at New Horizons at Marlborough, we wanted to let you know how, with a little planning, a guest visit can be more than just sitting down to talk and catch up. Check out some of the activities our residents enjoy with loved ones who have come to visit.

Board Games

From classics like Monopoly and Scrabble to more modern games like Blokus and Wavelength, games are a fun activity that keeps minds sharp. An advantage of board games is that they can entertain a group of any size: Whereas some are one-on-one contests, many multiplayer games have space for as many as 10 participants. If you and the person you are visiting enjoy board games, consider digging up some of your favorites or exploring the newer board games that come out every year.

Book Club

Rather than repeating the same stale “what have you been up to?” conversation during each visit, consider enlivening your chats by starting a book club with your loved one. Pick a book, choose how much of it you should both read, and upon your visit, discuss your thoughts on the book. With a wide variety of genres and options, you should be able to find a book you will both enjoy. If you don’t have time to read each week prior to a visit, or waning eyesight makes reading more difficult, try downloading the audiobook to stay on pace and continue the conversation.

Video Chatting With Loved Ones

For a larger reunion experience, skype or video chat loved ones who live far away. Connecting with old friends or distant family members can make it feel like they are right in the room with you. Consider including these individuals in your new book club as well.

TV or Movie Night

As with a great book, a TV show or movie can be a thought-provoking and entertaining discussion starter. Whether you are watching classic films from your loved one’s youth or new releases, you will be able to easily bring the big screen to you through streaming services and video on demand.
